八廓街也叫八角街，从某种程度上说，八廓街也是拉萨的象征，说起八廓街，拉萨人无不自豪，外地游客也一样，去拉萨必去八廓街! 八廓街的来历：７世纪藏王松赞干布率部族迁徙拉萨平原时，这里还是一片坦荡的沼泽地。他们在沃汤湖边安营扎寨，并修建了大昭寺。这座美丽的宫殿引起了无数朝圣者，渐渐地踏出这条环绕大昭寺的八廓街。最初这只是一条普通的路，后来成为朝圣者的转经路。“廓儿”意译为“圆圈”，引申为转经。八廓是中间的转经路，相对于它的，里面有“囊廓”，是大昭寺里的一圈转经回廓；外面有林廓（意指世界外围），是围绕包括布达拉宫在内的拉萨老城转一圈。从早到是晚总有数不清的转经者匆匆走在这３条路上，用脚步积累他们的功德。有不少人虔诚地从遥远的地方磕着等身长头来到拉萨。朝佛者构成了数量庞大的流动人口。拉萨人里，许多都是朝佛者的后代。?
