DJ Singapore Minister: Existing Nuclear Technology Unsuitable

SINGAPORE--A Singapore government study has found that existing nuclear-power technology is unsuitable for use in the city-state, but authorities will keep developing nuclear-energy capabilities to prepare for future needs, a government minister said Monday.

The government's pre-feasibility study into nuclear energy, which started in 2010, has "concluded that nuclear-energy technologies presently available are not yet suitable for deployment in Singapore," Second Minister for Trade and Industry S. Iswaran told Parliament in response to a lawmaker's question.

While newer nuclear-power plant designs are safer than previous makes, "the risks to Singapore--given that we are small and dense--still outweigh the benefits at this point," Mr. Iswaran said. "We prefer to wait for technology and safety to improve further before reconsidering our options."

Even so, Singapore will continue to invest in developing local nuclear-energy capabilities and track improvements in nuclear technology and emergency-response capabilities, the minister said. This includes funding local research and sending Singaporeans for relevant training overseas, he said.

日本福岛核电站出事故以后20公里以内都辐射相当严重了，这要是换成新加坡，就没有什么地方可以生存了。
